Saying goodbye to:

Ed McMahon (1923-2009)
Ed was a staple on The Tonight Show, as Johnny Carson's sidekick for 30 years. He died on June 23 at the age of 86.

Farrah Fawcett (1947-2009)
Farrah made her start in commercials and was on Charlie's Angels. She died on June 25 at the age of 62 after battling cancer.

Billy Mays (1958-2009)
Billy was a TV pitch man and salesman. He died on June 28 at the age of 50 from an apparent heart attack.

Music
An icon on radio for many years, Casey Kasem retired from his syndicated show, American Top 40.

The music world lost a huge icon this past month. On June 25th, Michael Jackson passed away at the age of 50.
Michael debuted at the age of 10 with his brothers in The Jackson 5. He went on to record the best selling album of all-time and is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Jackson 5, and as a solo artist.

His ride began on March 28th in Los Angeles and is scheduled to finish on May 9th in New York City. Phil will be cycling over 3500 miles, averaging 100 miles per day. Josh's favorite was U2 on the Popmart tour at the Kingdome.

Ralph said his favorite was either Air Supply in 1983 or Neil Diamond in 1980.

Brendan's favorite concert was at Biola's centennial celebration with Switchfoot, The Myriad and Tyrone Wells.

Arnell couldn't choose between The Smashing Pumpkins in the late '90's or a Tim McGraw concert at Coors Amphitheater in Chula Vista.

Darius Rucker, the lead singer of Hootie and the Blowfish has released his second solo album. This time out he goes full into country mode and pulls it off quite well. Learn To Live is the new CD and it has hit #1 on the Billboard Country Album chart as well as #5 on the The Billboard 200. We played part of the hit single "Don't Think I Don't Think About It" which is a #1 hit on all country charts. Check out the video below...

Music
Jackopierce is an acoustic, alt-country duo hailing from Dallas, Texas. Cary Pierce and Jack O'Neill joined forces in 1988 and toured extensively, eventually signing with A&M Records. The band broke up in 1997, Jack going on to perform in theater productions and Cary starting a record company and producing other artists. The two re-joined in 2002 for a few concerts and started putting together songs for a new CD. Promise of Summer was just released on September 9, 2008, the band's first studio album in 12 years. A certain magic happens when these two come together...great songwriting and excellent vocal harmonies...we think you will enjoy this new music from Jackopierce.

Death Cab for Cutie released one of the most anticipated albums of the Spring on May 13th. Narrow Stairs has hit big and radio stations are playing the new song "I Will Possess Your Heart." NPR's All Songs Considered talked about the album in it's Spring Music Preview. We also play a clip of "Bixby County Bridge" on our show.

needtobreathe is a new band out of South Carolina that is just hitting it big. The band recently came to San Diego for the Spirit West Coast music festival. Their new CD is called The Heat and we played a clip of the hit song "Signature of Divine."

She & Him is a new duo consisting of musician M. Ward and actress Zooey Deschanel. Their sound is retro, pulling from influences as varied as The Ronettes, Chet Atkins and Linda Ronstadt. Deschanel has a unique and distinctive voice. Combined with Ward's creative arrangements the duo brings about a harmony that is catchy and retrospective. We've been a little delayed because of the wildfires that swept through the area, but we can't really blame all of the delay on a disaster, now can we? Cassidy wrote in to confess: "The show I stop to watch during the day, night, or whenever it's on is Country Fried Home Videos. It is a show along the lines of AFV, but with a more redneck theme. We're Back with Show #21!

Summer is wrapping up and we are back from vacation with show #21!

This show is chock full of goodness, including some talk about Doug's vacation to Yosemite, California and Oregon and Jamie's concert review of Tim McGraw and Faith Hill in Anaheim.

It wouldn't be The Summerhill Gang without loads of pop culture goodness and we have plenty of it for you...in TV, we discuss the HUGE premiere of High School Musical 2, the finales of America's Got Talent and On the Lot, review the TBS comedy My Boys, and talk about a new cast addition to Heroes. In our Music segment, we introduce you to a band called The Polyphonic Spree and in Movies we discuss the winners of this summer's box office take. In our Best of the Web segment we introduce you to the Potter Puppet Pals and listen to some interesting words from the Miss Teen USA contestant from South Carolina. We wrap up this show with another Pop Culture Confessional, confessing to you the daytime TV shows that we stop and watch.

On DVD, Doug saw 300 and liked it very much, with warnings that this is a movie about battles with lots of graphic violence and blood. Definitely not for kids!

Well, we finally got a break in our busy (and FUN) summer vacations to put together a show for you. It's show #20...comin' at ya!
This time we talk about what we have been up to during our summer vacations. Jamie (and his wife) celebrated a 10 year anniversary, changed jobs and went to family camp with the wife and kids. Doug had family in San Diego from Virginia and Minnesota, picked up a Wii and even had time to see a few movies (in a theater!). While Doug is heading off on a two week camping trip to Oregon with his family, Jamie will be holding down the fort on Summerhill Drive and learning the ropes at the new job.

We have much pop culture goodness for you...in TV, we discuss more Summer Reality TV, including The Next Best Thing, the World Series of Pop Culture, The Singing Bee, Don't Forget the Lyrics and Who Wants to be a Superhero? Plus, we talk about the return of Psych and discuss shows that are new to us like The Closer, Damages, Saving Grace and My Boys. Our Movie segment covers many of the big summer movies that have been released in the last month including Ratatouille, Evan Almighty, Harry Potter, Transformers and The Simpsons. We also review DVDs of Bridge to Terabithia, The Guardian and more Battlestar Galactica. As always, we have a new Pop Culture Confessional for you where we confess the children's TV show themes that get stuck in our brains.

Did you happen to catch The Next Best Thing: Who is the Greatest Celebrity Impersonator? If not, you missed out on some amazing cheesiness. But, you also missed out on some great performers. Check out the website over at ABC. Also, watch the video below to see the winner, Trent Carlini, and his impersonation of Elvis Presley.

Have you watched either of the competing karaoke game shows? NBC has the deliciously cheesy show called The Singing Bee that is hosted by Joey Fatone of N*SYNC fame. Meanwhile, FOX is airing Don't Forget the Lyrics which is hosted by Wayne Brady and looks an awful lot like Who Wants to be a Millionaire. Bee is regularly beating Lyrics in the ratings, but we are split on which show is better.
If you are looking for cheesy and goofy with a superhero flair, the SciFi channel has what you are looking for. Check out this year's collaboration with Stan Lee over at the website for Who Wants to be a Superhero? With character names like Mindset, Hyper-Strike, The Defuser and Basura, how could you go wrong?
The USA channel has brought back one of our favorite shows with new episodes this summer. Psych, starring James Roday, Dule Hill and Corbin Bernsen is funny, witty and entertaining. What more could you want in a summer TV show?
We mentioned one of our favorite comedians, Jim Gaffigan, in show #18 and have recently discovered that he is co-starring in a 1/2 hour comedy over on the TBS channel. Check out information on My Boys and stay tuned for a review in our next show.
Cable TV channels like FX, USA, and TNT seem to be stepping up their games when it comes to high quality shows that debut during the summer. This year we have noticed a trend towards high quality dramas with leading ladies from the world of big screen movies. TNT has Kyra Sedgwick starring in the 3rd season of The Closer and has also debuted a new show, Saving Grace, starring Holly Hunter. Over at FX, you can see Glenn Close starring in a very interesting law drama called Damages. We hope the trend continues!

In other TV news: Drew Carey has been chosen as the new host for The Price is Right, stepping in for recently retired Bob Barker. Also, CBS decided to pull the low-rated Pirate Master off of the air and show the remaining episodes on their website.

Movies
The summer movie season is actually starting to wind down. Most of the big releases are now out in theaters and have made millions of dollars. We reviewed the following movies that we have seen:

Ratatouille - It was Doug's least favorite Pixar movie, but he thought it was good with fantastic animation. Jamie liked it more than Doug, but thought it was definitely less interesting for kids than previous Pixar movies like Cars and The Incredibles.
Evan Almighty - Doug enjoyed this movie starring Steve Carell and Morgan Freeman, but thought that there wasn't much depth to it. Both Doug and Jamie thought Steve Carell was hilarious in parts. Jamie joined Doug in his opinion that it was a decent movie to take the whole family to, but that it missed the "ark" when it came to catering to the Christian market.
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - The whole gang is back in the fifth movie based on the Harry Potter series from writer JK Rowling. David Yates does a great job directing and was able to condense an 860 page novel into a 2 hour and 18 minute movie without losing the important plot points. Jamie thought it was great movie and enjoyed it very much.
Transformers - This is the movie that is battling Spider-Man 3 for summer blockbuster glory! Check out this story over at Variety on how Transformers made over $152 million in its first 7 days in theaters. Jamie saw it and thought it was a great popcorn eatin', action/sci-fi/adventure flick. Go see it if you haven't already, it is worth it. The transforming robots on the big screen are great fun to watch.

Of course, Doug has been talking up the premiere of The Simpsons Movie. It has been out for a whole week, pulling in over $70 million in its first weekend, and he STILL has not seen it. If you did not know that this movie was in theaters, where have you been? The marketing has been crazy with 7-Eleven stores turning into Kwik-E-Marts and a big Springfield challenge to see which town would host the premiere. You can watch the winning video for Springfield, Vermont over at the USA Today website.

Indiana Jones 4 is currently filming in Hawaii and is set to premiere May 22, 2008. We read an article recently about Harrison Ford doing his own stunts at age 65.
JJ Abrams is currently filming the next Star Trek movie, set to premiere December 25, 2008. At the recent Comic-Con in San Diego, Abrams announced that Zachary Quinto (Sylar on Heroes) will be playing the young Spock and Leonard Nimoy, who made the role famous, will make a cameo in the film.

On DVD, we have watched the following:

Bridge to Terabithia (2007) - stars AnnaSophia Robb and Josh Hutcherson in a movie from Walt Disney based on the book. The special effects in the fantasy scenes are pretty fun, but they are a small part of the movie. Jamie saw it and was somewhat disappointed by this as the advertising for the film played up the fantasy scenes. The movie ended up being a story about outcasts, friends, love and loss and was enjoyable, but not great.
The Guardian (2006) - stars Kevin Costner and Ashton Kutcher about an aging Coast Guard veteran who teaches the young pups at an elite Coast Guard school. Jamie saw it and thought the story was awfully familiar (see Men of Honor with Robert De Niro). The direction by Andrew Davis was not consistently strong and the movie seemed disjointed. The acting was great and the rescue scenes are well-filmed.

The question from show #19 was: What is your current iPod dirty little secret?

Our friend Trevor wrote in to say, "This song was originally purchased back in May by my wife (Julie) after we heard it played at a wedding reception. I have to say I thought it was catchy at first, but definitely not in my usual genre of favorites. Alas, I have to confess that it's now on my iPod and I can't help but get into this song when it comes on. Alright, enough with the buildup...the song is called 'Escape' and it's by Enrique Iglesias."

This week's question is: What annoying song from a children’s TV show do you find yourself humming throughout your day?

Jamie's confession: One of my daughter Alison's favorite shows is "The Doodlebops". The opening song just sticks in my head. You can listen to it and other Doodlebops songs over at the Disney website.

Doug's confession: My son Zach loves the Noggin show "Max and Ruby". The opening theme song is so simple it sticks in my head. I hope it gets stuck in yours too. Check out more on Max and Ruby at the Noggin website.

Happy Summer...We're On Vacation!

Hey Summerhill Gang fans! As you've noticed, we have not up a new show for a few weeks. We are enjoying our summer here on Summerhill Drive, where temperatures are around 75 degrees and the skies have been pretty blue. If we go west we are at the beach, if we go east we are hiking in the mountains, if we go south we have the great city of San Diego and if we go north we are at Disneyland. We think it is the perfect place to be.

Because we are off enjoying our summer and vacation time with the family, we have taken a bit of a break from podcasting. Rest assured that we will put together a new show for you real soon. In fact, Show #20 should be out and available for your listening pleasure during the first few days of August.

We hope you are enjoying your summer as well.

This week in the happenings on Summerhill Drive we discuss the end of school and the beginning of summer, we talk about Jamie getting his wisdom teeth removed and we share about recent game night hilarity we had with some friends. In TV, we discuss Summer Reality TV and continue to follow the saga of Jericho. In Music, we each have some new artists to share with you, Matthew Ebel and Everyday Sunday. In Movies, we talk about Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Dreamgirls, Lady in the Water, The Day After Tomorrow and the DVDs of the Battlestar Galactica TV show. CBS has relented to the Nuts Campaign and is bringing back Jericho in 2008 for 7 episodes. Will you be watching? We will...it is like a bad habit...we just can't give it up! You can read about the renewal over at The Hollywood Reporter and you can follow the saga of viewer complaints at the Jericho Wiki and the Nuts Campaign website.
We've seen some great short movies from up and coming directors on the TV show On The Lot. Check out the website for all of the shorts and find out who your favorites are. Some of our recent favorites are "Glass Eye", "Sunshine Girl", "Polished" and "Broken Pipe Dreams."
Have you caught Creature Comforts on CBS this summer? Well, if you haven't, you are too late. Apparently, CBS has pulled it from the air. You can read about it over at TV Squad.
America's Got Talent is the #1 show this summer. Check out NBC's website to find out more about the show and watch video clips. Does Jerry Springer do a better job than Regis Philbin? Why have the judges put Boy Shakira through to the next round, but they passed on the dude who breaks things with his butt? It's a conspiracy!
The World Series of Pop Culture is coming back to VH1 on July 10th. If you did not catch this game show last summer, try to catch it this summer. It is a fun trivia competition on all things Pop Culture.

Music
We've got some new artists to share with you guys this week...

We played a bit of Matthew Ebel's song "Drive Away". Jamie discovered Matthew on the Lifespring Music Show hosted by Steve Webb. Check out Matthew Ebel's website for more great songs. He also does a music review podcast called the High Orbit Podcast. Check it out to hear new music and Matthew's take on it.

We also played a bit of Everyday Sunday, a new group that Doug was introduced to by our friend, Bart. They have a rock edge with pop sensibilities and a fun sound with a positive message. Check out their website and also their MySpace page for information on the band, their music and gigs they are playing in your area.

Movies
Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer is in theaters now. Jamie saw it and thought it was better than the first film in the series. It is rated PG and is less violent than its predecessor. All of the actors are back (Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, Michael Chiklis) and Laurence Fishburne adds his voice to the Silver Surfer. Jamie rated it a MATINEE PRICE movie.

Dreamgirls (2006) - stars Jennifer Hudson, Beyonce Knowles, Danny Glover, Jamie Foxx and Eddie Murphy. Hudson won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and Murphy was nominated for Best Supporting Actor. The movie is rated PG-13 and is a musical. Jamie rates it a MATINEE PRICE movie.
Lady in the Water (2006) - stars Paul Giamatti and Bryce Dallas Howard and was written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. Not as good as Shyamalan's previous movies (The Village, Signs, The Sixth Sense), but Doug thought it was better than the C rating it is getting over at Yahoo Movies.
The Day After Tomorrow (2004) - stars Dennis Quaid, Jake Gyllenhaal and Sela Ward and was written and directed by Roland Emmerich (Stargate, Independence Day, Godzilla, The Patriot). The movie has great special effects, but a weak storyline that seems overly simplistic for the huge implications of a new Ice Age. It brought in over $186 million at the Box Office during its run. Worth checking out to see the special effects.
Battlestar Galactica: The Mini-series (2004) - the 1970's science fiction TV show gets a reboot in this Sci-Fi channel mini-series that launched a TV show that has completed its third season. Doug and Christine watched it on DVD and were so engrossed, they did not notice that 4 hours had gone by.

The Summerhill Gang is finally back. It has been over 3 weeks since our last show, so we have plenty to talk about this time. The gang on Summerhill Drive is wrapping up the school year and heading into summer, where I am sure we will have plenty of BBQ and Street Ball action. This week we chat about the end of Little League and Softball seasons, Doug and family joining the mini-van revolution, a fabulous trip to Mexico to build houses over Memorial Day weekend, and our favorite comic, Brian Regan, coming to town.

Brian Regan is one of our all-time favorite comics. He has started a new tour and is coming to San Diego in August. He also has a new special airing on Comedy Central on June 10th. TV

The Simpsons aired its 400th episode this season. Check out the Top 10 Reasons Why Homer Simpson Should be President...

The first season of Heroes has come to an end. Is Sylar really dead? What about the Petrelli brothers, did they blow up in space together? Catch up online and prepare for Book 2: Generations in the Fall.
Has 24 lost its edge? This season was a bit of a downer, but the producers are promising big changes for next season. You can read more about that over at CNN.
American Idol crowned its sixth season champ. Jordin Sparks, a 17 year old from Arizona, won the title. Check out video of the announcement and Jordin's performance.
Jericho finished out its first season on May 9th and was promptly canceled by CBS on May 16th. Fans of the show have cried foul and wonder if there will ever be closure. CBS made a statement that you can read at the Jericho Wiki and you can also check out the Nuts Campaign that fans have started to send tons of peanuts to the CBS offices in protest.
Friday Night Lights is coming back in the fall! NBC announced its renewal for a second season at the Network Upfronts in May.
On The Lot had a great beginning to its season this summer, but we are wondering if FOX will stop messing with the format of the show. You can catch up on episodes and see the movies created by up and coming directors at the show website.
The Next Best Thing started last week. The show is horrible, but there are some definite talents showing up.

Movies
Shrek the Third followed Spider-Man 3 with its own HUGE opening. Jamie rated it a DVD RENTAL. Listen in to see how he ranks it compared to the first two movies. Also you can read about Shrek's record opening for an animated movie over at Yahoo.

Jamie also saw and reviewed Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. It was overly long and kind of weird in spots, but he rates it a MATINEE PRICE movie and recommends you see it in the theaters.

We also reviewed DVDs of Babel, The Prestige and The Nativity Story.
